On Tuesday, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed a bill into law legalizing abortion up until birth. In celebration that the New York legislature passed the Reproductive Health Act allowing this monstrosity to take place, Cuomo directed the One World Trade Center, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge and the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany all be lit in pink on Tuesday night.
Under the Reproductive Health Act, non-doctors are now allowed to perform abortions if the mother’s health is endangered or if the fetus is not viable. The previous law allowed abortions after 24 weeks if a woman’s life was at risk.
“In the face of a federal government intent on rolling back Roe v. Wade and women’s reproductive rights, I promised that we would enact this critical legislation within the first 30 days of the new session – and we got it done,” Cuomo said.
New York State’s bishops were very critical of Cuomo’s move, saying the state had become “a more dangerous one for women and their unborn babies”
In a joint statement the bishops added, “today, New York has added a sad chapter to this already Solemn date of January 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade,”
Prominent Catholics have urged cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York to declare Cuomo excommunicated. Cuomo’s abortion bill goes against the teachings of Christianity. To be excommunicated is to be forbidden fro the Churche’s sacraments. To be excommunicated, a Catholic must be judged by his bishop or the pope.
“This cannot be allowed to stand without canonical penalties. I am not a canon lawyer, but the truth is clear that Governor Andrew Cuomo is not in communion with the Catholic Church. At this point, canonical penalties forbidding him to receive Holy Communion or even, if possible, issuing a formal excomunication–are simply affirming what is already true and what he himself has done. To fail to issue all possible canonical penalties at this point would, to my mind, show Church to be irrelevant and a laughingstock,” Said Monsignor Charles Pope.
Cuomo has always been a long-standing supporter of abortion and scornful of those people who are pro-life, saying they had “no place in the state of New York.”
New York has always been the abortion capital of America. In 1970, New York was the first to pass the most permissive abortion law in America, one that defined the state as the country’s abortion refuge.
Forty-nine years later and New York has the highest abortion rate in the United States. In just 2016 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported 87,325 abortions.
So why now? Why has Cuomo passed the bill into law? Cuomo fears that Roe v. Wade could be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court knowing it is led by a conservative majority, leaving each state to regulate abortion with their own laws.
The Democratic-controlled assembly has passed the Reproductive Health Acts countless times in each session, each time the bill was blocked by the Republican majority in session. This is Cuomo’s way of securing the amendment into law.
It is without a doubt immoral and evil, New York has officially turned into California 2.0.
The change in law extends beyond the perimeters of Roe v. Wade and will ultimately result in an increase in the number of abortions in the state. By allowing non-physicians to perform abortions, it will endanger the health of more women. New York is heading towards a dark future, is there no common sense and morality left anymore?
